Valuable data from science and research are being systematically made accessible, networked, and sustainably usable in high quality for the entire German research system through the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). Until now, such data have often been available only in decentralized, project-based, or temporary forms.
Effective research data management strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration and reinforces Germany as a research location. It enables a systematic approach to big data and supports the use of artificial intelligence. Moreover, it facilitates the responsible sharing of data between science and industry as well as on an international level.
NFDI aims to establish a long-term digital knowledge repository — an essential foundation for addressing new research questions, generating insights, and fostering innovation.
Relevant data will be made available in accordance with the FAIR principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

NFDI involves 26 consortia and one union of consortia, Base4NFDI. These were selected in a science-led process managed by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The consortia cover diverse scientific disciplines: from cultural sciences, social sciences, humanities and engineering to life sciences and natural sciences.
The NFDI consortia have been kicked off in three funding rounds. The first round has been funded since October 2020, the second round since October 2021 and the third round since March 2023.
