Data-centered approaches in chemistry hold the promise of uncovering groundbreaking solutions critical for advancing energy and material transitions, pharmaceutical innovations, and circular economy endeavors. Since our FAIR4ChemNL workshop in June 2024, important developments have emerged across the Dutch and German chemistry communities – yet the potential of data to drive discovery and innovation remains underutilized, in part due to disparate data management practices and limited interoperability across disciplines.
As an outcome of the 2024 workshop, we jointly published a white paper outlining key challenges, opportunities, and recommendations for FAIR data practices in chemistry: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15050550.
This Workshop aims to reconvene scientists, data experts, and IT specialists to review progress, align ongoing initiatives, and define concrete next steps toward implementing FAIR data principles and unified data management solutions across the chemistry disciplines. The workshop is organized in a collaborative effort by the Dutch National Fundamentals and Methods in Chemistry (FMC) community and the NFDI4Cat consortium (Germany), with support from the Thematic Digital Competence Centre for Natural and Engineering Sciences (TDCC-NES).
The update meeting will bring together participants from Dutch and German academic institutions, to discuss remaining challenges and emerging solutions in chemistry digitalization, and to define a shared strategy toward common standards, interoperable workflows, and community-supported data management solutions that strengthen cross-disciplinary chemistry research.
