NFDI

The German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) association aims to make data systematically accessible and sustainably available.

The amount of research data is increasing every day. The German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) association is working to systematically make such data accessible and sustainably available. NFDI’s vision is to create a cross-disciplinary, digital repository of knowledge and to set standards in the field of research data management.

The association was founded by the federal and state governments in October 2020. The need for the creation of such an overarching organization had previously been identified by the Council for Information Infrastructures (RfII). The Joint Science Conference (GWK) followed the recommendation of the RfII and agreed on the establishment of NFDI with the adoption of a federal-state agreement on November 26, 2018.

The task of NFDI is to create improved access to valuable data resources, to promote the exchange of different research disciplines, and thus to strengthen Germany as a center of science. In addition, NFDI is also to advocate at the international level for the establishment of a research data infrastructure across national borders.

In order to take into account different scientific fields and their requirements for research data management, various consortia have been established under the umbrella of NFDI. Up to 30 consortia are to be selected for funding by the federal and state governments in a science-led process by mid-2022. The nine consortia in the first funding round – including NFDI4Cat – started in October 2020.

The key purpose of the NFDI Association is to promote science and research through a Germany-wide research data infrastructure. It significantly steers and coordinates the development of a networked information infrastructure according to the FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) and the creation of an optimized range of data-based services for science and research.
